The dreaded alt decision!
Posted On 05/31/2008 14:20:04 by Clyo

It was hard enough to decide what I would play as a main character and now I had to find a good class for an alt. Not long ago when I started AoC, I really really wanted to play an assassin, well a thief! I mean really. And I did, but when I saw my fiance's character die a couple of times I knew I had to play a healer. So I put my assassin aside to concentrate on bear shaman.

I should take my *sin* like they say in the game and use her as an alt... but... what makes that class special? Can't hide when someone in group is in combat and the major frontal damage is done with sneak attacks, good dps but no team buffs unless you put feat points in it for special skills that will help the team a bit... like any other classes out there have, but overall nothing special compared to a ranger or a barbarian. Many thinks it's just a matter of patience, that Funcom will eventually revamp a bit the class to make it more fun. What I hear from pvp assassin is that they loose all the time their fights, unless against a necro or demono if they can take them by surprise. Pve is feasable but tough, you have to plan everything especially against groups. I don't mind playing intelligently but it's frustrating to see the other rogues do better with less troubles.  I will be waiting, I still want to play an assassin, but right now it's not very fun.

So, that left me with TONS of rerolling to try to find a good class. I was not interested in another healer so I tried the only classes that was appealing to me from their description: dark templar (always loved the shadow knight template), Herald of Xotli (sounded nasty), Demonologist (was curious about the spells) and necromancer.
- Demonologist was all nuking and the male demon is DAMN ugly. I was hoping for a twisted beauty incubo after seeing the succubus but I was so wrong... deleted.
- Herald of Xotli sounded pretty powerful, and they probably are, but I didn't like the 2 min recast on avatar, and didn't like the avatar either. Should have made a female skin or something. Maybe I will try one once more if I get interested enough to check their feats and spells a bit but for now... deleted.

- Necromancer always was my favorite in ALL games I played, especially in Everquest. I knew the necro in AoC was different and... well found it pretty similar to EQ! As in old EQ: my pet can't tank so it is more like a dot spell, I have dots spells and a nuke. But AoC adds to that a pulsing *rune* ward against damage which helps me survive, temporary pets that appears after a crit I think, or a fatality? Anyway got 2 icy hate monsters plus my 2 normal pets at one time, got to love the swarm of undeads! I know from research I will have other cool pets that can cast spells or explode , or drain life from my ennemies to heal me, leech spell, fear etc... I would say an Everquest necro only with a wide variety of pets and spells and even AoE.

Yes you bet that even if the class need some love on many points I am trying one right now. Funcom is adressing the issues anyway and already posted what they will fix in a future patch. So far I am doing well in tortage, can take 2 mobs of same level then me or 3-4 of a level lower so it's fine!

Why I need an alt? I think I am pretty cured from alt-disease but my fiance can't always play when I can and if I even kill one mob without him on Sorchae he freaks out hehee. So I need an alt just for myself. I often wake up at night and not be able to go back to sleep for an hour or 2, so I play until I feel tired. I have free time in the afternoon also.

I will try to tell more about both the necromancer and the bear shaman classes as I discover them, probably will put the info in their respective sub-profiles under biography

So far so good, but I agree the class is very challenging, there is no place for mistake. I'll see how it goes in the 20's before deciding if I keep or delete her.

I might, Dark templar looks fun but seems to be truly effective only in a group. My bear shaman is all about combat, it sure is fun in this game.
